Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis indicates that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these drugs need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
